Five Laboratories That Put Paranormal Claims to Experimental Test

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Research Laboratory gathers five laboratories that put paranormal claims to experimental rather than anecdotal test, three of them connected by one researcher's own career.

Joseph Banks Rhine began card guessing extrasensory perception research at Duke University in 1930, and the Parapsychology Laboratory took its formal name there in 1935, standardizing the Zener card methods and statistical treatment that became the model for laboratory parapsychology worldwide. When Duke's mandatory retirement forced Rhine out in 1965, he moved the laboratory's endowment and staff off campus into an independent nonprofit, renamed the Rhine Research Center in 1995, which still runs experimental and educational work on extrasensory perception and psychokinesis today.

The Koestler Parapsychology Unit, established in 1985 at the University of Edinburgh through a bequest from the writer Arthur Koestler, held the United Kingdom's only endowed chair in parapsychology; its long serving first professor, Robert Morris, built extensive controlled research on telepathy, including the ganzfeld procedure, before his death in 2004.

The Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research laboratory, founded in 1979 by engineering dean Robert Jahn, studied whether human intention could influence random event generators over its 28 year existence, drawing sustained criticism of its statistical methods before closing in 2007.

SRI International, an independent nonprofit that separated fully from Stanford University in 1977, is best known within parapsychology as the site of the remote viewing research Harold Puthoff and Russell Targ began in 1972, funded for two decades by United States intelligence agencies and later declassified as the Stargate Project.
