Two Scriptures, One Revelation: The Dual Vedanta

The Sri Vaishnava tradition built on Ramanuja's qualified non-dualism holds that revelation reaches it through two distinct scriptures rather than one, an arrangement it names Ubhaya Vedanta, the dual Vedanta: the Sanskrit Vedas and Upanishads on one side, and on the other the Tamil hymns of the twelve Alvar poet-saints, gathered as the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, with Nammalvar's Tiruvaymoli honored as its single most important work. John Carman and Vasudha Narayanan's study of Pillan's commentary on the Tiruvaymoli describes how the tradition places this vernacular devotional poetry directly beside the Sanskrit canon as scripture in its own right, not beneath it as later commentary or as merely edifying folk piety, a status few other schools of Vedanta extend to a text composed in a regional language centuries after the classical Sanskrit corpus closed. The Theology of Ramanuja situates this dual canon as inseparable from the tradition's wider theological commitment to bhakti, devotion, as available to every soul regardless of the learning or social standing usually required to approach Sanskrit scripture directly, since the Alvars themselves came from a range of backgrounds and composed in the language ordinary worshippers actually spoke.
