Between 13 May and 13 October 1917, three shepherd children, Lucia dos Santos and her younger cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto, reported a series of six apparitions of Mary near the village of Fatima in central Portugal, occurring on the thirteenth day of each month. According to the children's accounts, the figure identified herself as Our Lady of the Rosary, delivered messages calling for prayer, penance and the recitation of the rosary, and entrusted the children with several messages, later described as three secrets, portions of which Lucia, the only one of the three who lived into adulthood, recorded and made public over subsequent decades.
The final apparition, on 13 October 1917, drew a very large crowd, including journalists and skeptics as well as believers, and was accompanied by a widely reported phenomenon in which many present described the sun appearing to spin, change color and move erratically in the sky, an event popularly known as the Miracle of the Sun, described by numerous witnesses in contemporary press accounts regardless of their own prior belief or skepticism.
The Catholic Church formally approved the apparitions as worthy of belief in 1930, and Fatima developed into one of the most significant Marian pilgrimage sites in the world, with Francisco and Jacinta Marto, who both died young in the influenza epidemic that followed the First World War, later canonized as saints.
