What the Non-Replication Changed

A failed replication does not erase the phenomenon it set out to test, and Persinger's defenders pointed to differences in equipment calibration and field strength between the two labs as a possible reason for the mismatch. But the Granqvist study shifted where the burden of explanation sits: after 2005, the weight of published evidence favors suggestibility and experimental expectation as the likely driver of God Helmet reports, rather than the magnetic field itself, and the study is regularly cited in the psychology of anomalous experience as the clearest independent test the original claim received.

The episode is now taught as much as a lesson in methodology as in neuroscience: a striking uncontrolled result generated a decade of public attention before a properly blinded replication caught up with it, a sequence common enough across parapsychology and consciousness research that this atlas records elsewhere in the Study type.
