A Story Told Long After the Journey

The Qissa-i Sanjan, the primary traditional source for the Parsi migration narrative, was composed roughly seven centuries after the events it purports to describe, and its account accordingly functions historically as a record of how the Parsi community remembered and understood its own origins by the sixteenth century rather than as a contemporary report of the migration itself. This gap between event and record is standard for many premodern community origin narratives, but it means historians treat specific details in the Qissa, including exact dates, the sequence of stops along the journey, and the precise terms negotiated with Jadi Rana, with real caution even while accepting the broad outline of an Iranian Zoroastrian migration to Gujarat as historically plausible and generally consistent with other evidence.

Archaeological and documentary evidence for the earliest period of Parsi settlement in India remains limited, which is part of why historians have not been able to narrow the traditional eighth to tenth century range to a more specific date, and some scholars have argued for migration occurring in multiple waves over an extended period rather than as a single organized journey, which would fit uneasily with the Qissa's more unified narrative.

Whatever the uncertainties surrounding its earliest details, the migration the Qissa describes is not in serious doubt as a historical process: an Iranian Zoroastrian community demonstrably existed in Gujarat by the medieval period and developed continuously into the modern Parsi community, whose religious and cultural identity still explicitly traces itself back to this founding migration.
