Two Communities, One Signal

Kol Chai went on the air in 1996, thirteen years before Kol BaRama existed, and it was built around a different bet about its audience. Rather than serving the Haredi, ultra-Orthodox community alone, Kol Chai set out to reach both Haredi and National Religious, or religious Zionist, listeners under one signal, a combined audience that does not always share the same politics, the same rabbinic authorities or the same relationship to the modern Israeli state, but that shares enough of a religious framework and a Hebrew language talk and music format to make one station workable for both.

Licensed and regulated by Israel's Second Authority for Television and Radio, Kol Chai broadcasts from Bnei Brak on 93.0 FM in the Gush Dan and central region and 92.8 FM in Jerusalem. Like Kol BaRama, it observes Shabbat by going silent from Friday sunset to Saturday nightfall, a practical marker across nearly every Israeli religious station regardless of which side of the Haredi and religious Zionist divide it otherwise serves. Its programming blends talk radio, news, religious commentary and music, presented across a daily lineup with no single defining host, in Hebrew.

By combining two audiences that Israeli religious broadcasting more often treats as separate markets, Kol Chai occupies a narrower and less examined space in the country's religious media landscape than either the exclusively Haredi stations or the explicitly religious Zionist outlets that grew up around it.
