Each position is a slot that a calculation fills with a number, and the reading comes from the number in the slot rather than from the slot itself. Each is a slot in the chart, filled by a calculation from a birth date or the letters of a name, and read for what it says about a particular area of the person. Where the number category treats the meanings of the numbers themselves, this category treats the framework that assigns numbers to aspects of a life, which calculation yields which number, and what that position governs.A modern framework The chart of positions is a feature of modern numerology, systematised in the twentieth century, drawing the letter-to-number conversions from earlier gematric practice but organising them into a standard set of life-numbers that varies little between contemporary authors. The atlas describes each position, the calculation behind it, and the meaning assigned to it.
