Regions

This category holds the geographic and cultural regions in which the traditions recorded here arose, used to place a system in the world rather than to define it. A region entry names the area, gives its modern equivalent where the historical name differs, and describes what arose there: the pantheons, texts, practices and figures the place gave rise to.

Regions are containers of context. Mesopotamia, the Nile valley, the Indus and Ganges plains, Greece, Scandinavia, Mesoamerica and West Africa each nurtured distinctive religious worlds, and knowing the setting helps make sense of the systems that grew in it.

Traditions travel, and regions are meeting-points as much as origins. Ideas, gods and techniques moved along trade and conquest routes (Babylonian astronomy into Greece, Greek philosophy into the Islamic world and back into Europe, Buddhism across Asia), and a region's religious life is usually a layered product of exchange rather than a sealed local growth.

The entries note these movements where they matter, so a region reads not as an isolated box but as a node in a larger web of contact, from which the more specific categories here (deities, sites, texts), can be entered.
