Wilmington is the largest city in Delaware, at the confluence of the Christina River and Brandywine Creek, and the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wilmington.

Founded

Founded as Fort Christina in March 1638 by Swedish and Finnish colonists under Peter Minuit, the first permanent European settlement on the Delaware River; taken by the Dutch in 1655 and chartered as an English town in 1739. 1
