The fixed star Canopus lies at Cancer 14 degrees 58 minutes, of the nature of Jupiter and Saturn. It is Alpha Carinae, set at the rudder of the ship Argo, and is the second-brightest star in the whole sky, seen only from southern latitudes. As the pilot star of the great voyage it is associated with journeys, especially by sea, and with piety, wide dominion, and knowledge gained through travel, though not without hardship. The fixed stars hold their places and lend their character to any planet that meets them.

The Second Brightest Star, Invisible from Most of Europe

Canopus is Alpha Carinae, apparent magnitude -0.74, the second-brightest star in the night sky after Sirius, at about 310 light years, spectral type A9 II, a bright giant or supergiant, considerably more luminous than the Sun by a factor in the thousands.

Its defining feature for the Northern Hemisphere is its declination, at roughly 52 degrees south. Canopus is invisible from anywhere north of about 37 degrees north latitude, which excludes almost all of Europe, including Rome and Athens marginally, but not Alexandria, where Ptolemy worked and from which it is visible low in the south. This geographical fact is the reason Canopus appears in Ptolemy's catalogue at all and is largely absent from northern European traditions, and it is a good example of how the observer's latitude shapes what a tradition contains.

The constellation Carina is a fragment. Canopus once belonged to Argo Navis, the ship of the Argonauts, which was the largest constellation in Ptolemy's catalogue and was broken up by Lacaille in the eighteenth century into Carina the keel, Puppis the stern and Vela the sails. Canopus marks the rudder or steering oar.

Canopus has a substantial modern use: it is a standard attitude reference for spacecraft. Because it is bright, isolated and far from the ecliptic, star trackers can lock onto it unambiguously, and Canopus sensors have been standard equipment on interplanetary missions since the Mariner programme. A star used for navigation for three thousand years is still used for navigation.

Jupiter and Saturn, and the Pilot of the Voyage

Canopus is given the nature of Jupiter and Saturn, and the tradition reads it as a star of journeys, especially by sea, of piety, of wide dominion, and of knowledge acquired through travel, with sorrow and domestic difficulty attached.

The maritime reading follows almost entirely from the constellation. Canopus is the rudder star of Argo, and the name itself is generally connected to Canopus the pilot of Menelaus, said in Greek tradition to have died in Egypt and been commemorated in the city of Canopus near Alexandria, though the derivation is contested and an Egyptian or Semitic origin has also been argued. Either way, the star sits in a ship and is named for a helmsman, and its delineation is about voyages. This is constellation mythology supplying the content and the planetary nature being fitted around it, which is the general pattern.

There is a real navigational basis as well. Canopus's brightness and southerly position made it a genuine marker for navigators in the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea, and it is prominent in Arabic astronomical and poetic tradition as Suhail, a name that carried strong associations of its own.

The Saturn half supplies the sorrow and the domestic trouble in Robson's entry; the Jupiter half the piety and the dominion.

Canopus is not among Agrippa's Behenian fifteen, which is unsurprising, since the Behenian scheme is a working list for a European practitioner and Canopus is not visible from most of Europe. That absence is a useful reminder that the magical star lists are practical documents shaped by where their compilers stood, not universal catalogues.
