Conflict, Line 2

The second line stands at the center of the lower trigram, Kan, a position of some real standing within the dispute, yet the line text is direct about its limits: unable to win the contest against the greater strength positioned above it in the trigram Qian, the wise course is retreat and concealment among one's own people, so as to escape blame rather than pursue a fight that cannot be won outright. This is one of the clearest statements in the whole hexagram of Conflict's underlying argument, that contention is not a contest to be won through persistence alone; matching one's claim to one's actual position matters more than sustaining the fight. Retreat here is not disgrace but calculation, choosing a smaller, protected sphere over open contention with a stronger party, and doing so before the confrontation forces a worse outcome.

Read against the hexagram's Image, which counsels the superior person to consider the beginning of any undertaking carefully, line two shows what that consideration looks like once a dispute is already partway underway: recognizing an unfavorable balance of strength and withdrawing from it deliberately rather than being driven from it. The line does not frame this as failure, only as an accurate reading of where the balance of strength actually lies, and an accurate reading of one's own position is treated throughout this hexagram as a form of wisdom in its own right.

Real strength is present at this line but held somewhere the system does not expect it, a yang stroke occupying an even position, which the standard rule counts an irregular placement. Centrality gives the line some standing, which is why it is capable of contesting at all, but the mismatch between its strength and its place means that standing is not enough to prevail against the greater force above it. When this line changes, the middle stroke of Kan becomes yielding, turning the lower trigram into Kun, the receptive earth, while the upper trigram Qian remains fixed above.

The resulting hexagram is Number 12, Standstill, heaven over earth, a figure in which heaven's energy rises away from an earth that sinks further still, the two failing entirely to meet, an image of stagnation and blocked communication between ruler and subject, or superior and inferior generally. That a line counseling sensible withdrawal from an unwinnable contest transforms into the hexagram of general stalemate is a pointed warning rather than a reward: avoidance that only removes one person from a dispute, without addressing what caused it, can leave the larger situation no closer to resolution, and in the worst case further from it. Later commentary reads this pairing as a caution rather than a simple echo, since a stalemate between heaven and earth is a far larger and more stubborn condition than any single dispute, however sensibly it was avoided.
