The Panathenaea was the great civic festival of Athens honouring its patron goddess Athena, celebrated annually with a larger Great Panathenaea every fourth year. Its central rite was the procession, depicted on the Parthenon frieze, that carried a newly woven robe (peplos) to the goddess's cult statue, accompanied by athletic, musical and rhapsodic competitions that made it one of the largest public festivals of the Greek world.
