Athena is the Greek goddess of wisdom, strategic warfare, weaving and the crafts, and patron of the city of Athens, to which she gave the olive tree. Born fully armed from the head of Zeus after he swallowed her mother Metis, she is the virgin goddess styled Pallas Athena and Parthenos, the Maiden, for whom the Parthenon on the Acropolis was raised. She favours cunning intelligence over the raw violence of Ares, guiding heroes such as Perseus, Odysseus and Heracles, and she carries the aegis and the head of Medusa on her breastplate. Her bird is the owl, and her Roman counterpart is Minerva.

Born from the Head, and What That Is Meant to Say

Athena's birth is one of the most deliberate images in Greek myth. Zeus swallows the pregnant Metis, whose name means cunning intelligence, and afterwards Athena springs from his head, fully grown and armed. Hesiod tells it so that Zeus internalises wisdom itself and then produces a daughter who is that wisdom made active. She has, in the standard accounts, no mother in the ordinary sense and never marries: the epithet Parthenos, the virgin, is central rather than incidental to her.

She is the goddess of practical, disciplined intelligence, the skill in the craftsman's hand and the strategy in the general's mind. This distinguishes her sharply from Ares. Both are war deities, but where Ares is the blind violence of battle, Athena is war conducted with forethought, and Greek storytellers side with her without hesitation.

Her attributes are a compact code: the aegis (a fringed goatskin bearing the Gorgon's head), the spear and helmet, the owl, and the olive. The owl marked her sharp sight; the olive was her gift, and Athens minted it on the coins that carried her owl across the Mediterranean.

The Contest for Athens, and the Parthenon

The city of Athens told a founding story in which Athena and Poseidon competed for its patronage. Poseidon struck the Acropolis and produced a spring (or a horse); Athena planted the first olive tree, and the city, judged by its people or its king, chose her gift and her name. The rivalry was not forgotten: Poseidon kept a cult on the same Acropolis, and the arrangement reads as a settlement between two powerful claims rather than a simple victory.

Her great temple, the Parthenon, was built on the Acropolis in the 440s and 430s BCE under Perikles, and housed Pheidias's colossal gold-and-ivory Athena Parthenos. It is important to be exact about function: the Parthenon was as much a treasury and civic monument as a place of daily sacrifice; the older wooden image of Athena Polias, guardian of the city, remained the true cult focus, and it was that image the city clothed in a new robe each year.

The Panathenaia, held every summer and expanded every fourth year into a grand festival, carried a newly woven peplos up to the goddess in a procession that the Parthenon frieze is usually read as depicting, the city presenting itself to its protector.

An Older Goddess Than the Greeks Who Named Her

Athena is attested before the alphabet. Linear B tablets from Mycenaean Knossos, written centuries before Homer, record an offering to a-ta-na po-ti-ni-ja, most naturally read as the Lady of Athana, which places a goddess bound to that site deep in the Bronze Age. Scholars have long suspected that behind the Olympian daughter of Zeus stands an older palace goddess, a protectress of the citadel and its ruler, later fitted into the Olympian family.

That older role survives in her constant function as poliouchos, the holder of the city. Across the Greek world it was Athena who guarded the fortified height, and the image that fell from heaven, the palladion of Troy, was hers; a city that held its palladion could not fall.

In later reception she became a figure of reason and the arts detached from cult, the emblem on academies and law courts far from Greece. That afterlife is real but selective: it keeps the wisdom and drops the armed guardian of a specific hill, the goddess to whom actual Athenians actually sacrificed for the safety of a real town.

Why this is disputed. Greek myth credits Athena with the Palladium's making, in one account fashioning the wooden image herself in memory of her friend Pallas, though other ancient sources instead hold it fell from the sky as a gift from Zeus, and the myths do not agree with each other. Ancient authors also disagreed about the object's later fate: Virgil has Aeneas himself carry the true Palladium out of burning Troy to Rome while Greek accounts held Odysseus stole it, and later tradition held the Roman relic was moved again to Constantinople under Constantine, so no single account of its origin or survival is agreed even within antiquity.
