G/Identity

The G/Identity centre is one of the nine centres of the Human Design bodygraph. Human Design is a modern esoteric system, originated in 1987 by Ra Uru Hu (born Alan Robert Krakower, 1948-2011), who presented its content as received teaching rather than as an inherited tradition. It is roughly four decades old and is best read as a contemporary synthesis, not as ancient wisdom or established fact. Ra Uru Hu combined four older systems that had never before been joined: the I Ching supplies the sixty-four gates, the Hindu chakra model the nine centres, the Kabbalistic Tree of Life the connecting channels, and Western astrology the method of calculation.

Where the Hindu chakra model it draws on has seven centres, Human Design maps nine, a difference the system explains by a claimed mutation in human form, a claim about the species that has no support outside the system and should be reported as its own, not as fact. In the model the G/Identity centre is classed as a "Identity" centre and is the centre of identity, love and direction, associated in the system with the sense of self and one's course through life. A centre may be "defined" (consistently active) or "undefined" (open and conditioned by others) in a given chart. These are features of a contemporary esoteric framework dating from 1987, described here as the system presents them.

Human Design has nine centres where the chakra scheme most often cited in modern Western usage has seven. This is one of the two that were added, and it has no classical counterpart at all.

What that means

The Head, Ajna, Throat, Sacral, Solar Plexus and Root all sit where a classical centre sits, whatever differences there may be in what each scheme says about them. The G or Identity centre does not. It is placed in the bodygraph between the throat and the sacral, in territory the classical scheme assigns to the heart centre, but it is not that centre: the bodygraph has a separate Heart already.

The addition is Ra Uru Hu's, published in 1987 along with the rest of the system.

Why the addition matters for reading the system

A borrowed scheme with two extra elements cannot be checked against its source, because the extras have nothing to be checked against. Claims about this centre stand or fall on Human Design's own authority and on nothing older. That is true of much of the system, and it is most obviously true here.

The other addition

The Spleen is the second centre with no classical counterpart. Between them, these two are the clearest evidence that the bodygraph is an adaptation rather than a transmission.
