The nine centres of the Human Design bodygraph are the hubs that its gates and channels connect. They are adapted from the chakra system but reorganised into nine rather than seven, and each is either defined or open in a given chart. The system was formulated in the late 1980s by Ra Uru Hu (Robert Alan Krakower) as a synthesis of the I Ching, astrology, the chakras and the Tree of Life.

Origins

Origin Period: Created in 1987 as a synthesis of four older systems, the I Ching, the chakra teaching, Kabbalah and astrology, and used as an instrument of psychological counselling. The system's components are read from a chart calculated for a birth moment. 1

Status

Standing as a Comparative Category: A modern authored system with no established scientific standing. In the only empirical test located, characterisations produced by Human Design methods could not be validated against the NEO PI-R personality inventory, and assent to them was found to be consistent with the Barnum effect. 2

The Nine Centres

The nine centres of the Human Design bodygraph are the hubs that its gates and channels connect, the Head, Ajna, Throat, G (identity), Heart (ego), Sacral, Spleen, Solar Plexus and Root. They are adapted from the chakra system but reorganised into nine rather than seven, and in a given chart each centre is either "defined" (consistently active) or "open" (undefined and receptive).

The pattern of defined and open centres determines a person's Human Design type and is read for how they take in and process different energies, a defined centre a source of reliable energy, an open centre a place of conditioning and potential wisdom.

Chakra reimagined

The nine-centre scheme is one of the clearest examples of Human Design's method of synthesis: it takes the familiar seven chakras, splits and rearranges them, and integrates them with the I Ching gates and the astrological calculation into a single diagram. The atlas notes this derivation, treating the centres as part of a modern system.

The atlas gives each centre its themes, its defined and open meanings, and its place in the bodygraph. The chakras the centres derive from, and the channels and gates that connect them, are treated in their own categories.
