Origin 1987

The Solar Plexus is one of nine centers in the bodygraph of Human Design, the modern system Ra Uru Hu began teaching in the early 1990s, and it is classed in this teaching as an awareness center, specifically emotional awareness. It governs mood, feeling and what the system calls emotional authority, in which clarity about a decision is said to arrive only after a wave of feeling has run its course, rather than in the moment a question is asked. It shares its name and general emotional association with the solar plexus, or manipura, chakra of the older seven chakra system, though Human Design reframes that emotional theme specifically as a wave that must be ridden out over time rather than trusted instantly. Roughly half of people are said to have it defined in this teaching's terms, making emotional authority one of the most common decision making styles it describes.

The Centre in the Human Design Bodygraph

The Solar Plexus centre is one of the nine centres of the Human Design bodygraph. Human Design is a modern esoteric system, originated in 1987 by Ra Uru Hu (born Alan Robert Krakower, 1948-2011), who presented its content as received teaching rather than as an inherited tradition. It is roughly four decades old and is best read as a contemporary synthesis, not as ancient wisdom or established fact. Ra Uru Hu combined four older systems that had never before been joined: the I Ching supplies the sixty-four gates, the Hindu chakra model the nine centres, the Kabbalistic Tree of Life the connecting channels, and Western astrology the method of calculation.

Where the Hindu chakra model it draws on has seven centres, Human Design maps nine, a difference the system explains by a claimed mutation in human form, a claim about the species that has no support outside the system and should be reported as its own, not as fact. In the model the Solar Plexus centre is classed as a "Awareness" centre and is an awareness and motor centre of emotion, treated as the seat of feeling and, in the system, of an emotional wave over time. A centre may be "defined" (consistently active) or "undefined" (open and conditioned by others) in a given chart. These are features of a contemporary esoteric framework dating from 1987, described here as the system presents them.

The Solar Plexus, and a Comparison That Runs Backwards

The Solar Plexus sits where a classical chakra sits, and is one of two positions where the Human Design assignment and the classical one are close to the reverse of each other.

The two schemes

In the classical chakra scheme as it circulates in modern Western usage, the centre at the solar plexus is associated with will, personal power and self-assertion, and the centre at the heart with feeling and compassion.

In the Human Design bodygraph the emotional centre is the one at the solar plexus, and the centre at the heart is concerned with will and drive.

This is recorded as an observation a reader can check against each system's own published description of its centres, not as a claim anyone has made about the relationship between them.

Why it is worth saying

The bodygraph is often introduced as the chakra scheme with two centres added, which is roughly true positionally and misleading here. Anyone reasoning from the classical associations to what the bodygraph means at this position will get it wrong.

The arithmetic

Nine centres against a classical seven, with the G or Identity centre and the Spleen having no classical counterpart at all, and the remaining seven corresponding by position with varying closeness of function.

Human Design was published by Ra Uru Hu in 1987 and is recorded here as a contemporary system.

Solar Plexus, Chakras

Human Design took the name of this centre from the tantric chakra. The name is borrowed; the function assigned to it is the modern system's own.
