The Throat is one of nine centers in the bodygraph of Human Design, the modern system taught since the early 1990s by Ra Uru Hu, and it occupies its own category in the teaching, simply called Throat, rather than being grouped with the awareness or motor centers. It is the center of manifestation, action and communication, the point through which every other center's energy must pass before it can be expressed or acted on in the world, which the teaching holds makes it the most complex center, with the largest number of possible gate connections. It occupies the same position as the throat, or vishuddha, chakra of the older seven chakra system, and both are associated with expression and communication, though Human Design assigns it the further, more mechanical role of being the chart's sole channel for outward action.

The Centre in the Human Design Bodygraph
The Throat centre is one of the nine centres of the Human Design bodygraph. Human Design is a modern esoteric system, originated in 1987 by Ra Uru Hu (born Alan Robert Krakower, 1948-2011), who presented its content as received teaching rather than as an inherited tradition. It is roughly four decades old and is best read as a contemporary synthesis, not as ancient wisdom or established fact. Ra Uru Hu combined four older systems that had never before been joined: the I Ching supplies the sixty-four gates, the Hindu chakra model the nine centres, the Kabbalistic Tree of Life the connecting channels, and Western astrology the method of calculation.
Where the Hindu chakra model it draws on has seven centres, Human Design maps nine, a difference the system explains by a claimed mutation in human form, a claim about the species that has no support outside the system and should be reported as its own, not as fact. In the model the Throat centre is classed as a "Throat" centre and is the centre of communication and manifestation, where energy from the other centres is expressed and made real in speech and action. A centre may be "defined" (consistently active) or "undefined" (open and conditioned by others) in a given chart. These are features of a contemporary esoteric framework dating from 1987, described here as the system presents them.

Nine Centres Against a Classical Seven: The Throat
The Throat corresponds in position to the throat centre of the classical chakra scheme, and it is the centre where the borrowing and the departure are both easy to see.
The correspondence
Both schemes place a centre at the throat and both associate it with expression and speech. That much is carried over. What Human Design adds is a structural role: in the bodygraph the throat is the point through which the other centres reach outward expression, and the type classification turns partly on which centres connect to it. That structural function is the system's own and has no counterpart in the classical model, which describes centres without connecting channels of this kind.
The arithmetic
The classical scheme most often cited in modern Western usage has seven centres; the bodygraph has nine. Two of the nine, the G or Identity centre and the Spleen, have no classical counterpart. The others correspond by position with varying closeness of function.
Both sides are moving targets
The sevenfold scheme is one arrangement among several described in Indian tantric traditions, and the version in general Western circulation is a popular settlement rather than an original. The comparison here is between a 1987 construction and that settlement.
