Juxtaposition Cross of Beginnings (53/54)

The Juxtaposition Cross of Beginnings is named for Gate 53 and Gate 54, both seated in the Root. Human Design reads Gate 53, from Hexagram 53, Development, as the pressure to begin, often with no interest in seeing a thing through, and Gate 54, from Hexagram 54, The Marrying Maiden, as ambition, the drive to rise and transform one's material circumstances. Juxtaposition Crosses are set apart from the Right Angle and Left Angle families, reserved for the four line one profile, and read as fixed almost past the point of alternative.

Its design half sits away from the Root entirely: Gate 42 and Gate 32. Gate 42 sits in the Sacral centre and is read as the energy to carry a process through to its natural end rather than abandoning it midway; elsewhere it pairs with Gate 53 in the channel of Maturation. Gate 32 sits in the Spleen and is read as an instinct for what will last, together with a caution about change undertaken for its own sake; it pairs with Gate 54 in the channel of Transformation.

So a chart carrying this cross starts and drives without necessarily finishing on its exposed Root surface, while beneath it a sacral capacity to complete answers to a splenic instinct for what should endure. The numbers are inherited from the I Ching; reading them as one cross belongs to the modern reading, not the classical one.

Gate 53, the personality gate here, falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form. Gate 54, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation. Behind them, Gate 42 falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind, and Gate 32 falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding.

So the pressure to begin and the ambition to transform the first article reads on this cross's surface answer to the arcs of form and transformation, while the sacral drive to finish and the splenic instinct for what lasts beneath them answer to the arcs of mind and bonding. The same pair, exchanged, is this cross's own reversal, the Juxtaposition Cross of Ambition, and, held instead in the Left Angle family, the Cross of Cycles, both orderings; the Right Angle family carries the identical pair too, as the Cross of Penetration, both orderings. Four gates, four different Quarters, no pair sharing an arc: this cross draws its whole reading from every corner of the wheel's own purpose rather than concentrated in one.
