Juxtaposition Cross of Shock (51/57)

The Juxtaposition Cross of Shock is named for Gate 51 and Gate 57. Human Design reads Gate 51, from Hexagram 51, The Arousing, sitting in the Heart or Will centre, as competitive courage, the shock that initiates and can startle other people into waking up; and Gate 57, from Hexagram 57, The Gentle, sitting in the Spleen, as intuition in the present moment, which the system associates with hearing rather than sight. Juxtaposition Crosses form their own family, belonging only to the four line one profile, and Human Design reads them as the tightest, least steerable of the three kinds.

Its design half is Gate 61 and Gate 62. Gate 61 sits in the Head and is read as the pressure to know the mystery behind existence, a pressure the system holds cannot be satisfied by information; it pairs with Gate 24 in the channel of Awareness. Gate 62 sits in the Throat and is read as detail, the organising of facts and particulars into an order that can be spoken; it pairs with Gate 17 in the channel of Acceptance.

So a chart carrying this cross startles and senses instantly on its surface, while beneath it an unanswerable mystery presses against a mind that wants everything named. The same pair also underlies the Cross of Intuition and the Left Angle Cross of the Clarion in both its arrangements. The numbers are inherited from the I Ching; reading them as one cross belongs to the modern reading, not the classical one.

What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this cross draws one gate from each of the four.

Gate 51, the personality gate here, falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind. Gate 57, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding. Behind them, Gate 61 falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation, and Gate 62 falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form.

So the startling courage and the present intuition the first article reads on this cross's surface answer to the arcs of mind and bonding, while the unanswerable mystery and the ordered detail beneath them answer to the arcs of transformation and form. The same pair, exchanged, is this cross's own reversal, the Juxtaposition Cross of Intuition, and, held instead in the Left Angle family, the Cross of the Clarion, both orderings; the Right Angle family carries the identical pair too, as the Cross of Penetration, both orderings. Four gates, four different Quarters, no pair sharing an arc: this cross draws its whole reading from every corner of the wheel's own purpose rather than concentrated in one.
