Left Angle Cross of Cycles (53/54)

The Left Angle Cross of Cycles is named for Gate 53 and Gate 54, both seated in the Root. Human Design reads Gate 53, from Hexagram 53, Development, as the pressure to begin, an impulse that starts new cycles and often has no interest in seeing them through; and Gate 54, from Hexagram 54, The Marrying Maiden, as ambition, the drive to rise and transform one's material circumstances. It belongs to the Left Angle family, read as transpersonal, a direction practitioners describe as answering less to personal choice than to what circumstance hands the individual.

Its design half is Gate 42 and Gate 32. Gate 42 sits in the Sacral centre and is read as the energy to carry a process through to its natural end rather than abandoning it midway; it pairs with Gate 53 in the channel of Maturation. Gate 32 sits in the Spleen and is read as an instinct for what will last, and caution about change undertaken for its own sake; it pairs with Gate 54 in the channel of Transformation.

So a chart carrying this cross starts and rises on a shared Root surface, while beneath it a drive to finish answers to a caution about change for its own sake, the design gates each named after the very personality gates they complete. The same pair also underlies the Juxtaposition Cross of Beginnings and, reversed, the Juxtaposition Cross of Ambition. The hexagrams are ancient; grouping them into one transpersonal cross is the modern system's own construction, dated to 1987.

What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this cross draws one gate from each of the four.

Gate 53, the personality gate here, falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form. Gate 54, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation. Behind them, Gate 42 falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind, and Gate 32 falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding.

So the starting pressure and the rising ambition the first article reads on this cross's surface answer to the arcs of form and transformation, while the finishing energy and the caution about change beneath them answer to the arcs of mind and bonding, the same four arcs the cross's own reversal, Gate 54 over Gate 53, also draws on however its two pairs are assigned to personality and design, and the same pair that underlies the Juxtaposition Cross of Beginnings and, reversed, the Juxtaposition Cross of Ambition. Four gates, four different Quarters, no pair sharing an arc: this cross draws its whole reading from every corner of the wheel's own purpose rather than concentrated in one.
