Left Angle Cross of Defiance (1/2)

The Left Angle Cross of Defiance is named for Gate 1 and Gate 2, the same pair that names the Juxtaposition Cross of Self-Expression, here read inside a different angle family. Human Design reads Gate 1, from Hexagram 1, The Creative, as the urge to give an individual creative direction some outward form, and Gate 2, from Hexagram 2, The Receptive, as the receptive sense of where that direction is meant to go. It falls in the Left Angle family, which practitioners read as fated in flavour, serving something beyond the individual rather than a self chosen plan, which is where the cross's name of defiance is read from.

Its design half is Gate 4 and Gate 49. Gate 4 sits in the Ajna and is read as the mind's habit of proposing answers to open questions; elsewhere it pairs with Gate 63 in the channel of Logic. Gate 49 sits in the Solar Plexus and is read as principle, the sense of what is acceptable that decides whether an arrangement continues; it pairs with Gate 19 in the channel of Synthesis.

Carrying the same gates as a fixed Juxtaposition cross but inside a transpersonal, Left Angle reading changes what the pattern is understood to serve, a role handed back by circumstance rather than a note simply held. The hexagrams are ancient; the pairing and the angle both belong to the modern system, dated to 1987.

Its first article reads Gate 1 as the urge to give an individual creative direction some outward form, now the more exposed gate, and Gate 2 as the receptive sense of where that direction is meant to go. What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this cross draws one gate from each of the four.

Gate 1, the personality gate here, falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation. Gate 2, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form. Behind them, Gate 4 falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding, and Gate 49 falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind.

So the outward expression and the receptive direction the first article reads on this cross's surface answer to the arcs of transformation and form, while the questioning mind and the guiding principle beneath them answer to the arcs of bonding and mind, the same four arcs the cross's own reversal, Gate 2 over Gate 1, will draw on again however its two pairs are assigned to personality and design. Four gates, four different Quarters, no pair sharing an arc: this cross draws its whole reading from every corner of the wheel's own purpose rather than concentrated in one.
