Left Angle Cross of Defiance (2/1)

The Left Angle Cross of Defiance, named here as Gate 2 and Gate 1, carries the same pair as its counterpart with sun and earth exchanged. Human Design reads Gate 2, from Hexagram 2, The Receptive, as the receptive sense of where a life is meant to go, now the more exposed gate, and Gate 1, from Hexagram 1, The Creative, as the urge to give that direction some individual, creative form. It sits in the Left Angle family, and Human Design reads that group as outward facing, less a chosen plan than a role other people keep handing back, which gives the cross its name.

Its design half is Gate 49 and Gate 4. Gate 49 sits in the Solar Plexus and is read as principle, the sense of what is acceptable that decides whether an arrangement continues; elsewhere it pairs with Gate 19 in the channel of Synthesis. Gate 4 sits in the Ajna and is read as the mind's habit of proposing answers to open questions; it pairs with Gate 63 in the channel of Logic.

Exchanging which gate carries the Sun puts direction ahead of expression, while the design half keeps the same Solar Plexus judgment answering to the same questioning mind. The hexagrams are old texts; the reversal and the Left Angle reading both belong to the system founded in 1987.

This Left Angle Cross of Defiance completes its two role arrangements with this ordering, Gate 2 and Gate 1 exposed, receptive direction ahead of outward expression. Its first article reads Gate 2 as the receptive sense of where a life is meant to go, now the more exposed gate, and Gate 1 as the urge to give that direction some individual, creative form. What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this ordering draws one gate from each of the four.

Gate 2, the personality gate here, falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form. Gate 1, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation. Behind them, Gate 49 falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind, and Gate 4 falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding.

So the receptive direction and the outward expression the first article reads on this ordering's surface answer to the arcs of form and transformation, while the guiding principle and the questioning mind beneath them answer to the arcs of mind and bonding, the same four arcs the earlier ordering of Defiance also draws on however its two pairs are assigned to personality and design. With both arrangements in place, Defiance's two gate pairs share the same wheel wide spread, one gate from each Quarter regardless of order.
