Left Angle Cross of Migration (37/40)

The Left Angle Cross of Migration is named for Gate 37 and Gate 40, which are in fact the two ends of one channel, Community, so its exposed half is a single bond rather than two separate traits. Human Design reads Gate 37, from Hexagram 37, The Family, sitting in the Solar Plexus, as the warmth of family and friendship, specifically the bargain that holds a household together; and Gate 40, from Hexagram 40, Deliverance, sitting in the Heart or Will centre, as the willpower to work, held against a real need for aloneness and rest. It falls in the Left Angle family, read as transpersonal, a direction answering less to what the individual chooses than to what circumstance hands back.

Its design half is Gate 5 and Gate 35. Gate 5 sits in the Sacral centre and is read as fixed rhythm, an inner timing that keeps eating, sleeping and working patterned; it pairs with Gate 15 in the channel of Rhythm. Gate 35 sits in the Throat and is read as a hunger for progress and for the feeling only a new experience supplies; it pairs with Gate 36 in the channel of Transitoriness.

So a chart carrying this cross holds one whole bond of belonging and withdrawal on its surface, while beneath it a fixed rhythm presses against a restlessness for what is new. The same four gates also recur across other crosses under other names, the Right Angle Cross of Planning and its own mirror; this exact ordering also appears as the Juxtaposition Cross of Bargains and, reversed, as the Cross of Denial. The hexagrams are ancient; grouping them into one transpersonal cross is the modern system's own construction, dated to 1987.

This Left Angle Cross of Migration completes its two role arrangements with this ordering, Gate 37 and Gate 40 exposed, the household bargain ahead of willpower and solitude. Its first article reads Gate 37 as the warmth and the bargain that holds a household together, now the more exposed gate, and Gate 40 as willpower to work, balanced against a real need for solitude. What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this ordering draws one gate from each of the four.

Gate 37, the personality gate here, falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind. Gate 40, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding. Behind them, Gate 5 falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation, and Gate 35 falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form.

So the household bargain and the willpower and solitude the first article reads on this ordering's surface answer to the arcs of mind and bonding, while the fixed bodily rhythm and the restless hunger for progress beneath them answer to the arcs of transformation and form, the same four arcs the earlier ordering of Migration also draws on however its two pairs are assigned to personality and design. With both arrangements in place, Migration's two gate pairs share the same wheel wide spread, one gate from each Quarter regardless of order.
