Left Angle Cross of Refinement (19/33)

This Left Angle Cross of Refinement is named for Gate 19 and Gate 33 rather than Gate 33 and Gate 19, sensed need placed ahead of private retreat. Human Design reads Gate 19, from Hexagram 19, Approach, as sensitivity to what a community needs, materially and physically, and seats it in the Root; Gate 33, from Hexagram 33, Retreat, seated in the Throat, is read as the need to withdraw and hold an experience privately before telling it. It sits in the Left Angle family, and Human Design reads that group as outward facing, less a chosen plan than a role other people keep handing back.

Its design half is Gate 1 and Gate 2, both in the G, or Identity, centre. Gate 1 is read as the urge to give an individual creative direction some outward form, pairing elsewhere with Gate 8 in the channel of Inspiration. Gate 2 is read as the receptive sense of where a life is meant to go, pairing with Gate 14 in the channel of the Beat.

Reversing which gate carries the Sun puts an outward sensitivity to need ahead of an inward retreat, while the design half still answers with the same Identity centre pair. Three of the body's nine centres are involved altogether, Root and Throat in the named pair and Identity alone beneath them. The hexagrams are ancient; the reversal and the Left Angle reading both belong to the modern system, dated to 1987.

The Left Angle Cross of Refinement is named for Gate 19 and Gate 33, and its first article traces the sensed need and the private retreat the two carry, together with their design counterparts, Gate 1 and Gate 2, both seated in the Identity centre. What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this cross draws from only two of the four, not one from each.

Gate 19, the personality gate, falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation. Gate 33, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form. Behind them, Gate 1 falls in the same Quarter of Mutation as Gate 19, and Gate 2 falls in the same Quarter of Civilization as Gate 33.

So this cross, unlike most of its cohort, draws its whole reading from two arcs rather than four: the sensed need and the creative direction beneath it both answer to the arc of transformation, while the private retreat and the receptive sense of direction beneath it both answer to the arc of form. A concentration the wheel's own arithmetic does not require of every cross, this one happens to carry, and it is a fact about the mandala rather than a claim about the strength of the reading it produces.
