Left Angle Cross of Separation (5/35)

The Left Angle Cross of Separation is named for Gate 5 and Gate 35. Human Design reads Gate 5, from Hexagram 5, Waiting, sitting in the Sacral centre, as fixed rhythm, an inner timing that keeps eating, sleeping and working patterned; and Gate 35, from Hexagram 35, Progress, sitting in the Throat, as a hunger for progress and for the feeling only a new experience can supply. It sits in the Left Angle family, and Human Design reads that group as outward facing, less a chosen plan than a role other people keep handing back.

Its design half is Gate 47 and Gate 22. Gate 47 sits in the Ajna and is read as a mind working over confusion, sometimes for a long time, until sense finally arrives of itself; it pairs with Gate 64 in the channel of Abstraction. Gate 22 sits in the Solar Plexus and is read as a social grace that flows or withdraws with the emotional wave rather than on demand; it pairs with Gate 12 in the channel of Openness.

So a chart carrying this cross holds a fixed bodily rhythm against a restless hunger for progress on the surface, while beneath it an unresolved mind waits on a mood it cannot command. The same pair of gates, mirrored, also underlies the Cross of Habits, and reversed again the Cross of Experience, with this exact ordering also forming the mirrored Cross of Separation. The numbers are inherited from the I Ching; reading them as one cross belongs to the modern reading, not the classical one.

The Left Angle Cross of Separation, in this ordering, is named for Gate 5 and Gate 35 rather than Gate 35 and Gate 5, the same four gates as its mirror cross with the personality and design roles exchanged. Its first article notes that the same pair, mirrored again, underlies the Cross of Habits and the Cross of Experience elsewhere in the system. What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this ordering draws on exactly the same four Quarters as its mirror, one gate from each.

Gate 5, the personality gate here, falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation. Gate 35, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form. Behind them, Gate 47 falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding, and Gate 22 falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind.

So the fixed rhythm and the hunger for progress the first article reads as outward facing rather than chosen still draw on the arcs of transformation and form, while the unresolved mind and emotional grace beneath them still draw on the arcs of bonding and mind. The same four gates recur across several named crosses in this family; the four Quarters supplying them do not change with which cross or which ordering is being read.
