Right Angle Cross of the Four Ways (19/33)

The Right Angle Cross of the Four Ways carries the same channel as the earlier Cross of the Four Ways with sun and earth exchanged, Gate 19 and Gate 33, now paired with the gates that were its design half. Human Design reads Gate 19, from Hexagram 19, Approach, sitting in the Root, as sensitivity to what a community needs, whether resources, shelter or closeness, now the more exposed gate; and Gate 33, from Hexagram 33, Retreat, sitting in the Throat, as the need to withdraw and hold an experience privately. It sits in the Right Angle family, the most populous of the three, and Human Design reads that family as steered chiefly by personal choice.

Its design half is Gate 44 and Gate 24, also exchanged. Gate 44 sits in the Spleen and is read as an instinctive memory for people and patterns; it pairs with Gate 26 in the channel of Surrender. Gate 24 sits in the Ajna and is read as a mind circling the same thought until it finally resolves; it pairs with Gate 61 in the channel of Awareness.

Putting community need ahead of instinctive trust changes what this cross puts forward first, while the same returning mind and private withdrawal sit beneath it regardless of order. The same channel, unreversed, is also another Cross of the Four Ways, with two further role arrangements of the same channel. Both hexagrams are old texts; pairing them this way as a life direction dates from the system's founding in 1987.

The Right Angle Cross of the Four Ways, in this ordering, exposes Gate 19 and Gate 33, community need ahead of private withdrawal. What it does not trace is where the four gates sit on the wheel itself, the Human Design mandala's division of its sixty four gates into four Quarters, and by that measure this ordering draws one gate from each of the four.

Gate 19, the personality gate here, falls in the Quarter of Mutation, purpose fulfilled through transformation. Gate 33, its personality partner, falls in the Quarter of Civilization, purpose fulfilled through form. Behind them, Gate 44 falls in the Quarter of Duality, purpose fulfilled through bonding, and Gate 24 falls in the Quarter of Initiation, purpose fulfilled through mind.

So the felt need of the community and the private withdrawal the first article reads on this ordering's surface answer to the arcs of transformation and form, while the instinctive memory for people and patterns and the mind that circles back to sense beneath them answer to the arcs of bonding and mind, the same four arcs the rest of the Four Ways family draws on however its two pairs are assigned and ordered. Exchanging which gate carries the Sun changes what this variant puts forward, but not which Quarters supply its four gates.
