Origin 1987
The 1/4 profile is one of twelve recognised profiles in Human Design, a modern system first taught in the early 1990s by Ra Uru Hu after a self-described 1987 experience in Ibiza, which layers birth chart astrology onto the I Ching's sixty four hexagrams, the Kabbalistic Tree of Life and the chakras. It pairs a first line Personality Sun, the conscious trait fixed at the birth moment, with a fourth line Design Earth, the unconscious trait fixed roughly eighty eight days earlier. The first line is the system's Investigator, building security through research, while the fourth line is the Opportunist, said to work through a fixed circle of friends and contacts rather than through study alone. The combination, nicknamed Investigator or Opportunist, is described in the teaching as gathering knowledge privately and then putting it to use through a small, trusted network.

Contested Use
Contested or Appropriated Modern UseDisputed as a description of persons. The one empirical test located, a University of Vienna psychology thesis, could not validate Human Design characterisations against the NEO PI-R personality inventory, and found assent to them consistent with the Barnum effect, under which generic statements are read as personally accurate. 3 Contested or Appropriated Modern UseThe I Ching of China, the chakra teaching of India, Kabbalah and astrology are drawn on here inside a scheme assembled in 1987 and offered as an instrument of psychological counselling. The four traditions it draws on are old; the arrangement that joins them is not, and none of them produced it. 2 Origins

The Profile in the Human Design Model
The 1/4 profile (Investigator / Opportunist) is one of the twelve profiles of Human Design, a modern esoteric system originated in 1987 by Ra Uru Hu and presented here as a contemporary framework rather than ancient wisdom. A profile is formed from two of the six lines, a scheme the system borrows from the six lines of an I Ching hexagram and reads psychologically: the profile pairs a conscious line with an unconscious one to give an archetypal role. The 1/4 profile joins the roles named Investigator / Opportunist. The line names and their meanings are Human Design's own twentieth-century reading, not a claim inherited from the Chinese classic whose six-line figures suggested the structure; they are described here as the system presents them, not as verified fact.
In Human Design's own teaching, the first line, Investigator, needs a solid personal foundation built through study before it feels safe to act; the fourth line, Opportunist or Networker, is described as needing an external foundation instead, a fixed circle of friends through which opportunity and influence arrive. The 1/4 profile is accordingly described as combining a private, research driven base with a more sociable, network dependent one, so that what the investigator learns alone is understood, within the system's own framework, to circulate and take effect chiefly through the fourth line's fixed circle of personal relationships rather than through public or institutional channels.
Lines One and Four, and the One Relation That Is Inherited
This profile pairs the first and fourth lines, and that particular pairing is the one place where Human Design's line structure genuinely reproduces something from the Chinese source.
Correspondence in the Yijing
Classical Yijing commentary holds that the six lines of a hexagram stand in relations of correspondence: line one with line four, line two with line five, line three with line six. The relation is between a line of the lower trigram and the line in the same relative position in the upper. It is a standard piece of commentarial doctrine, long predating any modern system.
The three pairs separated by three positions in Human Design's profile scheme are exactly those three correspondences.
And the pairs that are not
Human Design uses twelve of the thirty ordered pairs of distinct lines: the six separated by three positions, which are the correspondences above, and the six separated by two positions, which have no counterpart in the commentarial doctrine. The second set appears to be the system's own.
What is not inherited
The role names attached to the six lines, and the reading of a pair as a personality, are Ra Uru Hu's, published in 1987. Classical commentary treats the lines as positions in a situation, not as types of person. The atlas records the structural inheritance where it exists and does not extend it to the interpretation.
