Origin 1987

The Generator is one of five types in Human Design, the modern system taught since the early 1990s by Ra Uru Hu, defined by a Sacral center that is consistently active. The teaching gives it the strategy of responding to life rather than initiating, waiting for something to react to with its gut level yes or no before committing its energy, and it names satisfaction as the healthy signature of a Generator living correctly and frustration as the sign of one who is not. The teaching estimates Generators as the largest single type, well over a third of the population, and its emphasis on responding rather than initiating sets it apart from the Manifestor's strategy of acting first and informing afterward.

Contested or Appropriated Modern Use
Disputed as a description of persons. The one empirical test located, a University of Vienna psychology thesis, could not validate Human Design characterisations against the NEO PI-R personality inventory, and found assent to them consistent with the Barnum effect, under which generic statements are read as personally accurate. 3
Contested or Appropriated Modern Use
The I Ching of China, the chakra teaching of India, Kabbalah and astrology are drawn on here inside a scheme assembled in 1987 and offered as an instrument of psychological counselling. The four traditions it draws on are old; the arrangement that joins them is not, and none of them produced it. 2

The Type in the Human Design Model

The Generator is one of the five types of Human Design, the system's top-level classification of people by the configuration of their bodygraph. Human Design is a modern esoteric system, originated in 1987 by Ra Uru Hu (born Alan Robert Krakower, 1948-2011), who presented its content as received teaching rather than as an inherited tradition. It is roughly four decades old and is best read as a contemporary synthesis, not as ancient wisdom or established fact. Ra Uru Hu combined four older systems that had never before been joined: the I Ching supplies the sixty-four gates, the Hindu chakra model the nine centres, the Kabbalistic Tree of Life the connecting channels, and Western astrology the method of calculation.

To each type the system assigns a strategy, a signature said to accompany living in line with it, and a not-self theme said to signal living against it. For the Generator, the strategy is "To respond to life," the signature is Satisfaction, and the not-self theme is Frustration. These are prescriptive elements of a contemporary esoteric framework dating from 1987; they are described here as the system's own model and are not offered as medical, psychological or life advice, nor as established fact.

Where the Generator Type Sits in the Structure

The five Human Design types are not five independent categories. They are the outcome of a small number of yes or no questions asked of a chart, and knowing which questions they are makes the typology legible.

A mechanical rule

Human Design calculates a chart from a birth time, marks which of the nine centres come out defined and which open, and reads the type off that pattern. The Generator turns on the state of one particular centre, the Sacral. The rule is deterministic: the same birth data yields the same answer every time, which distinguishes the classification from an interpretive one.

The count of five is not inherited

Of the four systems Human Design draws on, none sorts people into five kinds. The I Ching has sixty-four hexagrams and no typology of persons; the chakra model describes a structure held to be common to everyone; astrology classifies by other means entirely. The five types are Ra Uru Hu's own addition, published in 1987.

What has not been shown

There is no independent evidence that people classified as Generators differ from people classified otherwise in the ways the system describes. Such a claim is in principle testable, since the classification is mechanical and the predicted differences are stated, but no published test establishes it.

This atlas records the system as its author set it out, and records that status honestly.
