The Reflector is one of five types in Human Design, the modern system Ra Uru Hu began teaching in the early 1990s, defined by having none of the chart's nine centers consistently active, so that its experience is described as shifting with whoever it is around. Its strategy is to wait a full lunar cycle, about twenty nine days, before committing to a major decision, letting the moon transit all of the chart's centers first, and the teaching names surprise as its healthy signature and disappointment as the sign of a Reflector who has decided too quickly. The teaching estimates Reflectors at under one percent of the population, making them by far the rarest of the five types. Where every other type is anchored by at least one consistently defined center, the Reflector's lack of any fixed center is precisely what the teaching holds makes it uniquely sensitive to, and reflective of, its surroundings.

The Type in the Human Design Model
The Reflector is one of the five types of Human Design, the system's top-level classification of people by the configuration of their bodygraph. Human Design is a modern esoteric system, originated in 1987 by Ra Uru Hu (born Alan Robert Krakower, 1948-2011), who presented its content as received teaching rather than as an inherited tradition. It is roughly four decades old and is best read as a contemporary synthesis, not as ancient wisdom or established fact. Ra Uru Hu combined four older systems that had never before been joined: the I Ching supplies the sixty-four gates, the Hindu chakra model the nine centres, the Kabbalistic Tree of Life the connecting channels, and Western astrology the method of calculation.
To each type the system assigns a strategy, a signature said to accompany living in line with it, and a not-self theme said to signal living against it. For the Reflector, the strategy is "To wait a full lunar cycle," the signature is Surprise, and the not-self theme is Disappointment. These are prescriptive elements of a contemporary esoteric framework dating from 1987; they are described here as the system's own model and are not offered as medical, psychological or life advice, nor as established fact.
The Reflector Is Defined by an Absence
Of the five Human Design types, the Reflector is the only one defined by nothing being present rather than by something being present, and that makes it structurally unlike the other four.
The rule
Human Design calculates a chart from a birth time and marks each of the nine centres as defined or open. The other four types are distinguished by which centres are defined and how they connect. The Reflector is the case in which none of the nine is defined.
Because it is the empty case, it is the rarest by construction rather than by assertion: it requires every one of nine independent conditions to fail at once, which happens for a small fraction of birth times. That rarity is arithmetic and can be computed by anyone with the calculation and a set of birth data.
What follows and what does not
The frequency follows from the rule. The system's account of how a person of this type functions does not follow from the rule; it is an interpretation attached to the empty case, and no independent published test establishes it.
Provenance
The typology is Human Design's own. Neither the I Ching, which supplies the sixty-four gates, nor the chakra model, which supplies a nine-centre adaptation of a classically sevenfold scheme, nor astrology, nor the Tree of Life, contains it. It was introduced by Ra Uru Hu in 1987 and the atlas records it as such.
