Sent by his usurping uncle Pelias on what is meant to be a fatal errand, Jason assembles a crew of heroes, the Argonauts, and sails the ship Argo to Colchis to retrieve the Golden Fleece. King Aeetes of Colchis sets seemingly impossible trials, and Jason succeeds only with the help of the king's daughter, the sorceress Medea, who falls in love with him and betrays her own family for his sake, a bargain whose consequences follow the couple long after the fleece itself is won.

Scholarly Note

Medea's later actions after the fleece is won, including the killing of her own brother during the escape and, in the best known later tradition from Euripides's tragedy, the killing of her own children by Jason, are not part of the fleece quest itself but form the myth's most debated afterlife in later literature. 1

Pindar's Fourth Pythian Ode, composed for a Cyrenean king who traced his line back to the Argonauts, frames the whole voyage as a genealogical charter myth establishing the ruling family's claim to descent from the heroes of the quest, rather than as adventure narrated for its own sake. 1

Before reaching Colchis the Argonauts put in at Lemnos, an island whose women had killed every man there, and later pass the Symplegades, the clashing rocks, safely by releasing a dove to test their timing, after which the rocks come to rest and never move again. 1

References to the Argonauts' voyage appear already in Homer, treated as a story so well known it needs no introduction, which places the tradition's oral roots well before any surviving written text. 1

Ancient sources disagree on how Jason actually obtains the fleece: some accounts have him win it by completing Aeetes's trials of the fire-breathing bulls and the sown warriors outright, while others state Medea's magic simply lulls the guardian serpent to sleep so the fleece can be taken directly. 1

The Argonauts and the Trials of Colchis

Jason, rightful heir to the throne of Iolcus, is sent by his uncle Pelias, who has usurped the kingdom, on an errand meant to remove him permanently: retrieve the Golden Fleece, the hide of a magical ram, from the distant kingdom of Colchis at the eastern edge of the Greek world. Jason assembles a crew of the era's greatest heroes, the Argonauts, including Heracles, the musician Orpheus, and the twins Castor and Pollux, and sails aboard the specially built ship Argo, surviving a string of dangers along the way, including the clashing rocks of the Symplegades and the harassment of the blind prophet Phineus by the Harpies, which the Argonauts finally drive off in gratitude for which Phineus gives them crucial guidance for the rest of the voyage.

Arriving in Colchis, Jason finds King Aeetes unwilling to simply hand over the Fleece, and instead sets a sequence of trials meant to be fatal: yoking a pair of fire-breathing bronze bulls to plow a field, sowing the field with dragon's teeth that spring up instantly as fully armed warriors, and finally overcoming the sleepless dragon that coils permanently around the Fleece itself, guarding it without rest.

Among the Argonauts' earlier stops, the crew is briefly delayed on the island of Lemnos, whose women, having killed the island's men in a fit of collective anger at their infidelity, welcome the Argonauts warmly enough that the crew very nearly abandons the voyage there entirely before Heracles, who has stayed with the ship, shames them back into continuing toward Colchis.

Medea's Help and Its Lasting Cost

Jason survives Aeetes's trials only because the king's own daughter, the sorceress Medea, falls in love with him and secretly provides the magical assistance he needs: an ointment to protect him from the bulls' fire, and a means of turning the sown warriors against one another rather than against him. When Medea further helps him steal the Fleece itself by lulling its guardian dragon to sleep, the two flee Colchis together, and Medea, to slow her father's pursuing fleet, kills her own brother Absyrtus and scatters pieces of his body into the sea, forcing Aeetes to stop and gather them for burial rather than continue the chase.

The pair return to Greece as husband and wife, but the marriage Medea sacrificed her family for eventually collapses when Jason abandons her years later to marry a Corinthian princess for political advantage, a betrayal Medea answers with a terrible vengeance, killing the new bride and, in the version of the story most familiar today, her own children by Jason as well, so that the union that made the Fleece's recovery possible ends in a devastation the quest itself never predicted. Pseudo-Apollodorus's Bibliotheca preserves the fullest connected ancient account of the whole voyage and its aftermath, though the fullest poetic telling of the voyage out is the earlier Argonautica of Apollonius of Rhodes.
