International Orthodox Christian Charities was established in 1992 as the official international humanitarian agency of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the United States of America, serving Orthodox Christian jurisdictions across the country rather than any single one of them exclusively, a shared agency spanning the whole of American Orthodoxy from the moment of its founding onward. It focuses exclusively on humanitarian assistance rather than religious activities, providing no funding for church missions such as religious education or missionary work of any kind whatsoever, a limit set at its own founding.

Since its founding it has distributed emergency response, water and sanitation, sustainable livelihoods, food security and health assistance in more than 60 countries across Africa, eastern Europe, the Middle East and the United States and Caribbean, a geographic reach that spans several continents from a single founding mandate limited strictly to humanitarian work rather than evangelism, a distinction the organization itself states plainly as its own operating principle.

International Orthodox Christian Charities is active today, distributing emergency response, water and sanitation, sustainable livelihoods, food security and health assistance in more than 60 countries worldwide, spanning four continents in total across its full program area each and every single year without interruption. As a tax exempt organization it is required to file an annual Form 990 with the US Internal Revenue Service, a public regulatory filing disclosing its revenue, expenses and assets each year to the American public and to its own donors and supporters alike.

Its own IRS Form 990 filing reports total revenue of 36,219,572 US dollars and total expenses of 34,182,627 US dollars for the fiscal year ended 31 December 2024, funding emergency response, water and sanitation, sustainable livelihoods, food security and health programs across more than 60 countries in total, spanning Africa, eastern Europe, the Middle East and the United States and Caribbean, more than three decades after its 1992 founding as an Assembly-wide humanitarian agency serving all of American Orthodoxy.
