The wording of the Sabian symbol for this degree is not reproduced here. The phrasing in general circulation is Dane Rudhyar's, from An Astrological Mandala (1973), and stays in copyright until 2069. The atlas has withheld its own reading of the degree along with it, because that reading followed the copyrighted image closely enough to stand in for it. What remains is the degree itself, its sign, its decan and its term, which are facts about the zodiac and belong to nobody.

Cancer 18: The Hen Scratches the Ground
A hen works the dirt with her feet, turning it over in search of food not for herself alone but for the brood she is provisioning, an unglamorous, repetitive labor performed daily and without any single dramatic payoff. Still inside Mercury's decan and, for one more degree, Mercury's term as well, before Jupiter takes the term boundary at twenty.
Jones set the scene down from Wheeler in the 1925 Balboa Park session that produced all 360 degrees between morning and evening; the reading attached here, naming a practical concern with the everyday nourishment needed to sustain one's outward-reaching activities, is Rudhyar's 1973 gloss, notably more grounded and domestic than the abstractions of the two degrees just before it, a reminder that Rudhyar's more metaphysical style was not his only register. The shadow, if there is one, is scratching that never turns anything up, effort spent daily with no guarantee the ground holds what is needed, a risk any provider recognizes. Cancer could not ask for a more literal image of its own core business than a mother bird working soil for food to keep her young alive, unglamorous, unfinished, and repeated tomorrow regardless of today's result. The scene also has no weather in it and no threat overhead, which is its own point: Cancer's nurture is mostly this, ordinary and undramatic, closer to daily maintenance than to any single rescuing act.
Cancer 18: Naming the Older Systems, and Charubel's Image
The decan and term already recorded for this degree trace to two named ancient writers. Vettius Valens, writing in Greek around the year 175, divided each sign into three ten degree faces under a rotating planetary sequence, leaving Mercury to rule this decan, the second of Cancer, and Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos separately preserves the Egyptian bounds table, keeping this degree under Jupiter's term as well. Neither writer pictured anything, only ruled it. The first complete pictorial set for all 360 degrees survives whole in 1494, in Johannes Angelus's Latin Astrolabium Planum, safely public domain but never freely translated into English.
The next complete English set is Welsh minister John Thomas's, writing as Charubel in 1898, whose entry for this degree describes a bull tossing a man on its horns, a blunt picture of sudden, violent reversal rather than a slow or gradual conflict. Practically, this degree is mostly used to time events through a progressed Sun, Moon or angle reaching it exactly, or to flag two charts sharing it closely enough to matter in synastry, both applications considerably younger than the systems named above. A reversal this sudden is exactly the kind of image astrologers point to when explaining why the Sabian layer is read as color and emphasis on top of a chart rather than as a technique that predicts events on its own.
