The wording of the Sabian symbol for this degree is not reproduced here. The phrasing in general circulation is Dane Rudhyar's, from An Astrological Mandala (1973), and stays in copyright until 2069. The atlas has withheld its own reading of the degree along with it, because that reading followed the copyrighted image closely enough to stand in for it. What remains is the degree itself, its sign, its decan and its term, which are facts about the zodiac and belong to nobody.

Ptolemy's own preferred redistribution of the terms (Tetrabiblos I) gives somewhat different boundaries. Structure

Something Like a Forge Beneath the Surface of the Earth
One further source stands apart from the Jones and Rudhyar material entirely. Charubel's 1898 degree symbols, compiled well before Balboa Park, give this degree something like a forge beneath the surface of the earth. A number of men are working in an almost nude state, owing to the heat. It proves to be an engine room belonging to a large steamer. Counting from Leo's start, this is the fifth degree, placing it in the sign's first decan. Its decan is ruled by Saturn rather than the Sun, which colors the degree with something Leo does not supply on its own.
The narrower term division belongs to Jupiter, a still finer layer of rulership laid across the sign and decan. The original session behind this degree took place in 1925, when Marc Edmund Jones and the clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler drew all 360 cards blind, in Balboa Park, San Diego, one degree at a time. Jones printed his results in 1953. The phrasing that most sites and books repeat, though, comes from Dane Rudhyar's 1973 rewrite, An Astrological Mandala, which remains under copyright and is not reproduced here. Leo is fixed fire, a sign that wants its warmth to be visible and its identity to be recognized rather than merely felt. The point of tracking a degree this closely is not to predict an event but to place it exactly within Leo's span.
Leo 5: Reading the Engine Room
Charubel's scene for this degree rewards a slower look than the provenance article can give it. What begins as something like a forge under the earth resolves, as the seer watches, into the engine room of a large steamer: the vision itself corrects its first impression, and that correction is half the meaning. A forge is mythic, Vulcan's territory, fire worked by strength; an engine room is industrial, fire disciplined into schedule and horsepower. The degree seems to say that what feels like ancient, buried, personal labour is actually propulsion, that the sweat spent below decks is what moves the visible ship above. The workers stripped by heat add the cost: this is fire served at close quarters, glory's boiler room rather than its bridge.
For the fifth degree of Leo, a sign that prefers the deck and the applause, the image relocates the sign's pride to the place passengers never visit, and suggests that whoever holds this degree does their most consequential work out of sight, felt as momentum rather than seen as performance. The shadow is resentment, stokers who know the ship cannot sail without them and still hear the cheering happen elsewhere; the remedy the image itself offers is the second look, the recognition that the underground fire was never a punishment but an engine. Read on a natal Sun or Mars, the degree tends to mark strength that drives from below, and asks that it be honoured before it has to demand honour.
