The Christian Reformed Church in North America's own position statement page on marriage. States marriage is an institution created by God, a covenant relationship established by mutual vows between a man and a woman united by God. States that for the church's first 150 years its theological understanding of marriage agreed with its social and legal context. States the church held, from 1908, that a divorced person who remarried lived in continual adultery, that Synod 1956 rejected this reading as without scriptural basis, and that Synod 1980 accepted guidelines addressing divorce and remarriage pastorally in its place. States Synod 2016 determined that same-sex marriage is in conflict with the Word of God and that this was later added to the Church Order as Article 69-c, barring a minister from solemnising a marriage in conflict with the Word of God.
