The Genadendal Mission Museum's own official history records that Georg Schmidt founded the first Moravian mission station in South Africa at Baviaanskloof in the late 1730s, that Boer farmers and the Dutch Reformed Church forced his departure, and that in November 1792 three Moravian missionaries, Hendrick Marsveld, Daniel Schwinn and Christian Kuhnel, refounded the abandoned station, renaming it Genadendal, after finding Schmidt's convert Magdalena still keeping the faith alive fifty years on. It records the museum's collection as declared a South African national cultural treasure in 1991 and its buildings as a national monument since 1980.
