Thomas Keating was a Trappist monk and one of the three Trappists credited with devising Centering Prayer, and this 1986 book is his own founding published statement of the method, a contemplative practice drawing on the Christian mystical tradition. As the method's own founding text it is the correct source for what Centering Prayer is and when it was formulated. Its limit is that it presents the method from inside its own Christian contemplative framework and from one of its originators' perspective, so a claim comparing Centering Prayer to a different tradition's meditation practice, or a critical assessment of its reception within Catholic theology, needs a source outside this founding account.
