Geza Vermes was a leading Dead Sea Scrolls scholar, and this Penguin volume is his standard one volume English translation of the non biblical scrolls recovered from Qumran, the sectarian rules, hymns and other texts distinct from the biblical manuscripts also found there. Its strength is that it remains the most widely used single volume English rendering of this material, prepared by a scholar with direct, decades long engagement with the scrolls themselves rather than a secondhand compiler. Its limit is that it covers the non biblical Qumran material specifically, and as a translation intended for a broad readership it summarizes textual and dating debates rather than arguing them in full, so a claim resting on a contested textual question needs a more technical scholarly source alongside this standard translation.
