The Evil Eye: An Account of This Ancient and Widespread Superstition

Frederick Thomas Elworthy was a Victorian folklorist, and this John Murray book is his survey of evil eye belief and apotropaic amulets across the Mediterranean world, now in the public domain. Its value is real as an early, wide ranging documentary survey gathering belief and practice from many regions into one comparative account. Its limit is the reason for its tier two placement: it is a Victorian era work, written before modern anthropological method and without the theoretical framing later scholarship brings to belief systems, so a claim needing a rigorous modern analysis of evil eye belief should be checked against contemporary anthropological or folklore scholarship alongside this older survey.
