Hans Dieter Betz's edited volume is the standard English translation of the Graeco-Egyptian magical papyri, working directly from the surviving papyrus texts themselves rather than from later secondhand description of late antique magical practice. That direct translation from primary papyrological material, checkable against the papyri's own content, including the vowel formulas and the divine name Iao this atlas draws from it, is the volume's real evidentiary basis. This record has not independently traced later scholarly revision of any specific translation choice in it. Use it for the documented content of the Graeco-Egyptian magical papyri; a claim about how these formulas were used ritually beyond what the papyri themselves state needs a separate interpretive source.
