The Rebbe's Army: Inside the World of Chabad-Lubavitch

Sue Fishkoff's The Rebbe's Army, Inside the World of Chabad-Lubavitch, published by Schocken Books in 2003, is a journalist's book length study of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement's global outreach network, based on Fishkoff's own reporting and interviews with Chabad emissaries across many countries rather than on archival research. Its strength is breadth of access to the movement's on the ground operation at a scale few academic studies attempt, and it remains one of the most cited general accounts of Chabad's outreach structure. Its limit is that it is journalism rather than a peer reviewed scholarly monograph, written largely sympathetically from extensive access the movement granted, so a claim about Chabad messianism or internal theological dispute, contested topics within the movement itself, should be checked against the more critical academic literature on Chabad rather than against this account of its outreach work alone.
