Alfred Metraux was a leading anthropologist of his period and this is a classic mid-twentieth-century ethnography of Haitian Vodou, covering its cosmology, ritual and social role from his own direct fieldwork in Haiti. This record states its own honest limit: its terminology and some of its specific readings are now dated and have in places been superseded by later scholarship, Karen McCarthy Brown's Mama Lola among it, so a claim about contemporary Vodou practice should be checked against a more recent source.
