Origin from 1888
In 1888, the third Lambeth Conference of Anglican bishops, meeting in London a generation after the Archbishop of Canterbury convened the first such conference there in 1867, already recorded here, adopted as its Resolution 11 a statement of four essentials for church unity that the Episcopal Church's House of Bishops had first put forward at Chicago in 1886: the Scriptures as containing all things necessary to salvation, the Apostles' and Nicene Creeds, the two sacraments Christ himself ordained, and the historic episcopate locally adapted to the needs of different nations. Named the Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral for its two points of origin, already recorded here in its own right as the Anglican Communion's own adopted primary document, it became and remains the Communion's standing framework for pursuing reunion with other Christian churches, invoked in Anglican ecumenical dialogues for well over a century afterward, long before the Anglican Church in North America broke from the Episcopal Church in 2009, also already recorded here.
