Origin from 1982

In 1982 the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, the worldwide body of Reformed and Presbyterian denominations, declared apartheid a theological heresy and suspended the white Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa's membership over its support for the system, an unusual step by a body that rarely expels a member church over a political and moral rather than doctrinal question.

How the World Alliance of Reformed Churches Suspended the Dutch Reformed Church Over Apartheid

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

In 1982 the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, the worldwide body uniting Reformed and Presbyterian denominations, took a step it rarely took against any member: it declared apartheid a theological heresy in its own right, not simply a political wrong, and suspended the membership of the white Dutch Reformed Church of South Africa over its support for the system.

That suspension was unusual on its own terms. The Alliance ordinarily reserved expulsion or suspension for genuine doctrinal disputes, matters of belief rather than politics or morality, and its willingness to treat apartheid as heresy marked the church's racial theology as a matter the worldwide Reformed family would not simply set aside as a member's internal affair.

The suspension put real distance between the Dutch Reformed Church and the wider Reformed and Presbyterian world it had belonged to. A church that had stood for decades as apartheid's theological defender now stood outside the international body of its own tradition, formally cut off rather than merely criticized.

What the 1982 suspension changed for the Dutch Reformed Church was the end of quiet toleration from its own denominational family. The worldwide Reformed church had named apartheid heresy and put the Dutch Reformed Church's own membership on the line over it, a pressure the church would spend the years that followed answering.
