Origin from 1918
Seventy one years after the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod organized in Chicago in 1847, and twenty nine years before the Lutheran World Federation formed in Lund, Sweden in 1947, both already recorded here, American Lutheranism's three largest English and German speaking bodies set aside decades of separation. The General Synod, the General Council and the United Synod of the South had cooperated for years beforehand, sharing a Common Service since 1888 and coordinating chaplaincy and relief work for Lutheran soldiers and sailors during the First World War, and in 1917 a joint committee began drafting a constitution to unite them in time for the four hundredth anniversary of the Reformation. Delegates gathered in New York City in November 1918 and formally constituted the United Lutheran Church in America, at the time the largest Lutheran body in the United States, electing Frederick H. Knubel its first president. Two smaller bodies, the Slovak Zion Synod in 1920 and the Icelandic Synod in 1942, later joined the merged church, which remained the country's leading Lutheran denomination until it merged again in 1962 into the Lutheran Church in America, itself a forerunner of the wider Lutheran World Federation cooperation already recorded here.
