The fourth stage of two unconnected cycles, the Aztec Fourth Sun and Hesiod's Heroic Age, grouped only because both traditions place them fourth in their own sequence. Joachim of Fiore's scheme stops at three ages and has nothing at this position; the pairing here is a matter of shared count, not shared origin or content.

Where Decline Is Not Safe to Assume

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Position 4 in Its Cycle collects the fourth stage of four world age schemes: the Hindu Kali Yuga, the Aztec Fourth Sun, Hesiod's Heroic Age, and the Jain Dushama-sushama. For the Hindu cycle of four yugas, position four is the end of the line, the present age of declining dharma that will run until the whole cycle turns again toward a new Satya Yuga, and it is the member of this group most people outside these traditions have heard of by name. The Jain scheme runs six ara rather than four, so Dushama-sushama is not an ending but the last of only two ara, alongside the one before it, in which Jain doctrine still holds liberation to be possible before the deeper decline that follows.

Hesiod's Heroic Age is the clear outlier in this group and the reason position four cannot be read as a simple continuation of position three. Where the Bronze Age before it, and the Iron Age after it, both belong to Hesiod's overall pattern of decline through worsening metals, the Heroic Age breaks that pattern outright: a race of demigods, more just and noble than the warlike Bronze Age they followed, identified with the heroes of Thebes and Troy, some of whom Zeus settles in the Isles of the Blessed rather than sending to a shared underworld. The Fourth Sun, ended by a flood that drowned humanity in Aztec myth, is again simply sequential. Position four, across this small group, is where a strict decline narrative is least safe to assume.
