Figures commissioned and sent out to carry a teaching, from the Greek apostolos, one who is dispatched. The heading is used almost entirely for Christianity here, and holds the twelve named in the Gospels, Judas Iscariot among them, together with Paul, who was not one of the twelve and argued at length for his standing. The Gospel lists themselves differ, which is why several of these men appear under more than one name in the sources.
