Followers and students of a teacher, as distinct from those commissioned to go out and teach. Ananda, Mary Magdalene and Joseph of Arimathea are among those gathered here, and the fit is loose in each case. Ananda attended the Buddha for twenty-five years and by tradition recited the discourses at the first council, which is nearer transmission than study. Mary Magdalene is called apostle to the apostles in a long Western tradition. The heading follows the Gospel lists rather than the roles these figures held.
