Road Guardian Deities holds the dosojin pairing, deities enshrined together at roadsides and boundaries specifically to protect travelers and mark safe passage. Ame-no-Uzume and Sarutahiko are the atlas's two entries, and the Kojiki gives them a single shared scene as the reason for the pairing. When the heavenly descent of Ninigi is blocked at the crossroads between heaven and earth by an enormous figure every other deity is too frightened to approach, Ame-no-Uzume alone steps forward, bares her breasts and questions the stranger directly, learning he is Sarutahiko, the earthly kami sent to guide rather than oppose the descent. Their marriage follows from that crossroads meeting, and later tradition remembers the two together at exactly the kind of place their own story is set, a road, a boundary, a point where a traveler needs safe conduct.
The heading is kept apart from Protectors because the office here is about guarding a place of passage, a crossroads or boundary, rather than protecting a person's life and standing directly the way Abu Talib's entry is defined. It is kept apart, too, from Ame-no-Uzume's own separate role in the story of Amaterasu's cave, an act of a different kind that belongs to her own page rather than to this pairing. Sarutahiko's later drowning at Ise, recorded immediately after the crossroads myth that makes him famous, ties the pairing permanently to both a road and a coastline without displacing the crossroads scene as the reason the two are filed together. A second entry belongs here only when another catalogued pairing or figure is defined by guarding a specific place of passage rather than a person.
