Virgin Goddesses holds a goddess whose formal virginity is itself a defining trait of her cult and her mythology, not an incidental biographical fact. Athena is the atlas's one entry so far. Born fully grown and armored from the head of Zeus after he swallowed her mother Metis on a prophecy that her second child would overthrow him, Athena is consistently reckoned the virgin among the Olympian goddesses in Greek tradition, and she never marries across a mythology that otherwise pairs off nearly every major deity. Her patronage of crafts, strategy and civic order, her contest with Poseidon for Athens, and her recurring role guiding favored heroes such as Perseus, Heracles and Odysseus, are offices she holds in that unmarried, self-sufficient standing rather than because of it.

The heading is reserved for a goddess whose virgin status is treated in her own tradition as a defining and remarked-upon feature of who she is, not merely a detail never mentioned either way. That is a narrower and more specific claim than Warrior Goddesses, which groups by martial action rather than by marital or sexual status, and a figure can in principle belong to both headings without either one absorbing the other; the atlas simply does not yet hold another entry whose own tradition makes virginity the same kind of standing claim Athena's does. A second entry belongs here only when another catalogued figure's tradition treats her unmarried, virgin status as constitutive of her identity in the same explicit way.
