Marquis, sometimes spelled marquess, ranks between duke and earl in the nobility the Ars Goetia lays over its seventy-two spirits, and it is one of the more frequently used titles among them. Like the other ranks, it marks a place in a borrowed human court rather than any power the texts show the spirit exercising directly.
